Cogmed Working Memory Training


Cogmed Working Memory Training is a clinically proven program for children and adults with attention deficits related to memory deficits, as well as other learning challenges as a result of poor working memory skills.

Through a home-based computer program, working memory capacity is increased, resulting in stronger attention, logic and reasoning skills, improved concentration, and reduced impulsive behavior. Cogmed programming takes approximately 30-40 minutes per day, 5 days a week, for 5 weeks. The game-like interface is as fun as it is challenging! Eight out of ten children who complete programming show measurable improvement in attention and complex reasoning skills. Parents and teachers report improvements in communication, taking initiative, and independent task completion as well.

What Is Working Memory?

Working memory refers to the ability we have to hold and manipulate information in the mind over short periods of time. It works like a mental notepad to help us store important information to carry out tasks. Children and adults with working memory deficits are easily distracted, struggle to remember instructions, and have difficulty starting, prioritizing and finishing tasks. Studies have shown that they also have difficulty in school and at work, particularly with reading comprehension and math, due to their inability to hold in mind sufficient information to allow them to complete the task at hand.

The AD/HD Connection

Research shows that children with AD/HD have an average working memory level roughly equal to that of a non-AD/HD seven year old. Strengthening working memory can help to reduce the social, academic and other challenges that children with AD/HD face every day.

Foundations Developmental House offers three different Cogmed Working Memory programs:

Cogmed RM for school-aged children, Cogmed QM for adults, and Cogmed JM for preschoolers.
